LOW VISION CARE

Low Vision Care is established to help you with the proper devices (such as strong glasses, magnifiers or telescopes), and with accompanying training, be able to continue to read, see TV better, and to do other tasks in your daily routine that you may be struggling with due to a decrease in vision.

What is Low Vision?

Partial Vision Loss resulting in visual impairment is referred to as "Low Vision." A person with low vision may have reduced visual acuity (the ability to perceive detail); an obstructed or diminished field of vision; or reduced ability to read print, see faces, and recognize detail that are in poor contrast, or a combination of all of these.

Low vision is a condition that cannot be corrected by conventional eye-glasses / contact lenses, medicine, or surgery and is usually the result of injury, poor health or a variety of disorders that affect the eye (many age related), including : Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, and Retinitis Pigmentosa.

People with low vision retain some usable vision. Our goal at Country Hills Eye Center is to train the individual to utilize their vision optimally.

Signs of Low Vision

  • Difficulty recognizing a familiar face
  • Difficulty reading - print appears broken or distorted
  • Difficulty seeing objects and potential obstacles such as steps, curbs, walls, and furniture.

    Is Low Vision Common ?

Yes! Having Low Vision is actually the third most commonly occurring physical impairment in those over 65, exceeded only by heart disease and arthritis. Many who are visually impaired have found help with their vision problem through Low Vision Care.

What is Low Vision Care ?

Low Vision Care is the evaluation and management of those that are visually impaired by eyecare and rehabilitation professionals (Certified Low Vision therapist). The goal of the care is to help those with low vision to adapt to overcome their vision impairment by learning to use their vision more efficiently. Based on individual lifestyle needs, solutions will be sought to help to help each patient achieve their visual goals. This may include the recommendation of products known as Low Vision Devices; in conjunction with instructional training sessions with a certified low vision therapist.

What are Low Vision Devices ?

Low Vision Devices are special lens systems designed to magnify or illuminate images to improve visual functioning.

    Video magnifiers (CCTV's) for reading.
    Color or Black and white
Low vision devices may take the form of optical products such as magnifiers, telescopes, high-powered spectacles, absorptive filters or electronic devices (CCTV's). In addition, there are many helpful non-optical devices, such as large print address books, magnifying make-up mirrors, writing and signature guides, and computer screen enlargement programs, among others.

What can I expect from the Low Vision Care I receive?

Typically, Low Vision Care is an ongoing service in which eyecare and rehabilitation professionals work with the visually impaired person over time to meet their visual goals. An initial Low Vision evaluation will take approximately one hour, but additional follow-up visits of 15-30 minutes may be needed until all of the visual goals have been satisfied.

One thing that should be kept in mind is that Low Vision Care will not restore lost sight. Instead, this care assists the visually impaired in maximizing their remaining functional vision.

    How much will it cost?

If you are covered by Medicare, your low vision evaluation will likely be covered, at least in part. The low vision devices that may be recommended by our Certified Low Vision Therapist, however, are not covered by Medicare or most other private insurance plans.
