Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a new
treatment available for Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Visudyne is the
first drug of its kind to be approved for the treatment of wet
AMD. The wet for of AMD-the type for which Visudyne has been
approved is a great threat to vision. In the wet form of the
disease, new blood vessels grow beneath the retina where they leak fluid
and blood and can create a large blind spot in the visual center.
The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Visudyne, a
photosensitizer to be used in the treatment process of select patients
with well-defined forms of AMD. This treatment is an outpatient
procedure, in which the drug is injected over a ten-minute period into
the arm. the drug then concentrates in the abnormal blood vessels,
and sealing off the leakage without damaging the surrounding area.
Repeat treatments are usually needed to maximize efficacy of the
process.
With PDT, vision may be preserved and,
in some cases improved, for patients with wet AMD.
