Cataracts are a common, age-related condition that can lead to blindness if not addressed.

What Are Cataracts?

Although the development of cataracts doesn’t interfere with your vision right away, over time, they will overtake most of your vision and therefore cause eye associated issues such as difficulty reading and driving. Thankfully, science has made major progress in ophthalmology! With the help of our eye physicians and surgeons, your vision can be restored.

Cataracts are best described as clouds that form on the lens of your eyes. The clouds are formed by natural proteins found in the eyes that begin to clump together. Over time, the cluster of proteins will grow larger and thicker until the person can no longer see out of their lens. While mature age is the most common cause of cataracts, it can actually happen at any age.

Some of the causes of cataracts may include, but are not limited to:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking large quantities of alcohol
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Prolonged exposure to sunlight
  • Trauma to the eye (such as injury or surgery)
  • Use of corticosteroid medications

What Are Symptoms Caused By Cataracts?

How can you tell if you’ve started to develop cataracts? Don’t worry–cataracts don’t cause any pain, but they do cause vision to blur at both close and long range. In addition, cataracts may produce a number of other symptoms:

  • Dull or yellowing of colors
  • Fewer details in vision
  • Changes in glasses prescription
  • Sensation of glare while reading or driving
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Perceiving “halos” around lights
  • Hypersensitivity to light

If you are beginning to experience any of these symptoms, be sure to schedule an eye checkup at our Ogden, UT facility. Our medical experts will be able to confirm whether or not you have cataracts during your consultation.
